In our fifteenth podcast episode, we brought Igor Ivkić, Head of the Cloud Computing Engineering Master's programme, in front of our microphone.

Without the cloud, our world as we know it today would not function. In the digital age, we are confronted with it in almost every area of our lives: be it streaming on Netflix, scrolling through social media or sending emails.

All of these services are cloud-based, which means that our data is stored on various computers around the world. But what actually happens to the information collected about me as a user? This is a question that many people have certainly asked themselves, but have not looked into in any depth. We put an end to this in the new podcast episode with Igor Ivkić.

Services such as social media platforms can create profiles of you as a user. There is not one person in the background who collects all the data and observes you as an individual. It's more about companies that show you advertising based on your age, gender, length of stay and user behaviour.

Igor Ivkić, Head of the Cloud Computing Engineering Master's programme

In the interview, the IT expert discusses both the benefits and the topic of IT security, as well as the risks of the cloud. For the programme director, one thing is certain: cloud solutions do not always make sense, which is where our graduates of the Master's in Cloud Computing Engineering come into play as experts and consultants.

In any case, the trend can no longer be stopped: in many situations, cloud services are simply indispensable due to their scalability and user-friendliness. Otherwise, we would have to give up on-demand streaming, online shopping on Black Friday and Google & Co. And be honest: would you be willing to? We want to know! Tell us in the comments on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or LinkedIn.

Behind-the-scenes

The podcast was recorded by Bianca Nastl, a member of the marketing department at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences and a graduate of the university herself. "Just today I heard on the radio that more than half of all Austrians accept not just the necessary cookies, but all cookies. There is often a lack of awareness of the extent of our digital footprints," is Bianca's impression.

Igor Ivkić shed light on how transparent we really are in an interview. The programme director has 14 years of professional experience in IT and studied for a Bachelor's degree in IT Infrastructure Management and a Master's degree in Business Process Engineering and Management at FH Burgenland while working. Since autumn 2017, he has been employed as a researcher at the Research Center for Cloud & Cyber Physical Systems Security at Forschung Burgenland. In 2018, he began his PhD studies at Lancaster University (UK), where he is researching cyber-physical systems, specifically in the field of "IT security".
