Podcast #19: Do we really need qualified carers?
The podcast can be found on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and other popular platforms. You can also find our other podcast episodes on our website under the "Podcast" tab.
"The academisation of nursing is responsible for the nursing crisis. After all, qualified nurses are too busy to work on patients." This prejudice has persisted for years. But why is it there? And the better question: is there any truth to it?
In Campus Talk, we tackle this question and get to the bottom of the causes of the staff shortage. Spoiler alert: the statement "It used to work without qualified nursing staff" has had its day.

We need the academisation of nursing: it is a reaction to demographic change and the increasingly complex developments in healthcare and nursing. However, our Bachelor's degree programme does not deprive anyone of the opportunity to go into nursing. There are many other ways to gain a foothold in the industry without a baccalaureate.
Nadine Graf, Head of the Healthcare and Nursing degree programme
In the interview, the head of the degree programme explains why we need nursing assistants and nursing assistants just as much as nurses at an academic level, and what opportunities are available with and without a school-leaving certificate. She also discusses possible solutions that could counteract the nursing shortage. One of these is the employment model in the Bachelor's degree programme in Healthcare and Nursing, which many of our students are already using.
PS: If you would like to study on our Bachelor's degree programme in Healthcare and Nursing, you can also take this step without a school-leaving certificate - e.g. with the university entrance qualification examination or our preparatory course.
Behind-the-scences

The podcast was recorded by Bianca Nastl, a member of the marketing department at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences and a graduate of the university herself: ‘It's such a shame that people who find their calling in nursing are broken by the unacceptable working conditions. The coronavirus pandemic has unfortunately exacerbated these developments. That's why action must be taken now: Applause is not enough. A work-life balance is essential to retaining employees, especially in the care sector.’
