The Department of Information Technology and Information Management has several laboratories available for research and teaching. Some of these laboratories are to be used for specific projects. Due to the thematic focus of the department, keywords such as data ownership, data security and IT security are also the content of many projects.
CCPSS
The department houses the CCPSS - "Research Center for Cloud & Cyber Physical Systems Security".
The centre deals with the topics of digitalisation, Industry 4.0, and management & technology. Example projects that are currently being researched include critical infrastructures, autonomous driving, digitalisation & training, Internet of Things, smart farming and smart building.
The Vlizedlab is a standardised, Linux-based virtualisation environment developed at the University of Applied Sciences. This allows the adaptive use of various software systems and operating systems for teaching or test situations. Essentially all software-based exercises in which working on real or simulated computer hardware is the central theme can be carried out in this lab.
The unique selling point of the Vlizedlab is the set-up time. Setups take place within a few seconds, so that the required infrastructure can be made available quickly and efficiently for different requirement profiles in teaching and research.
The VlizedLab uses only open source components and can be used at any educational institution free of licence fees.
The witch's kitchen of computer scientists - various microcomputers are available in the IoT lab. Equipped with appropriate actuators and sensors, practical applications in the field of Industry 4.0, Smart Farming or Smart Home can be developed and tested.
The "Internet of Things" supports us in our daily lives as well as in industry. Actuators and sensors communicate with each other, completely without human interaction. Be it as a smart home or smart farming, as function monitoring of machines to report possible damage at an early stage, or as life-saving sensors that warn of flooding. Intelligent systems can optimally adapt required resources to our consumption.
The research in the IoT lab at the Department ITM deals with forms of integration of microcomputers in our everyday life. The multitude of current and future application possibilities is ultimately only made possible by the creativity of the researchers.
The ITM Department maintains two rooms for applied project work and media research.
Media lab
The media lab is a training room equipped with twenty computer workstations. Central use of the Windows environment is made through the application of selected Adobe Creative Cloud applications for image, video and audio editing and web development.
The laboratory infrastructure is increasingly used for teaching in the Bachelor's degree programme Information, Media & Communication. Lecturers and students of the courses "Media Design in the e-Lab", "e-Lab (Media Workshop)" and other optional subjects are regular users here. The media room is also used regularly by users in the Master's programme Information Media Communication, e.g. in the courses "Media Informatics 1" and "Media Informatics 2", as well as in various optional subjects. The Master's programme Applied Knowledge Management uses the diverse possibilities of the media lab in the "Media and Communication Workshop", among other things.
Media room
The media room is designed as a studio for photo and video recordings. For recordings against a neutral background, a flexible studio background (Neewer Green Screen, fabric panels in green and white; Photoflex white and grey paper) is available. For photo shoots, a studio flash system consisting of several Elinchrom D-Lite lights with various Rotalux umbrellas and reflectors and a wireless flash release is used. Four LED video lights (Neewer, colour temperature adjustable) are available as continuous light for video shots. For object shots, a repro stand (Kaiser) and a photo table (FalconEyes Photography Table) can be used.
Equipment
In addition to the equipment in the media lab and media room, various photo and video equipment is available that can be borrowed by lecturers and students for in-house or external use as needed. This includes digital photo/video cameras, various lenses and various photo and video tripods. For mobile video recordings, the DJI RONIN-M hovering tripod or two shoulder tripods and a clip-on video light can be used.
For audio recordings, various condenser microphones with microphone poles, external recording devices and digital audio radio links for videographers are available. Various open and closed headphones and several stand mics for dubbing complete the equipment for audio post-processing.
