Pinkafeld, the island in the countryside
Austria’s most modern university campus is that of the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland in Pinkafeld. Spanning 10,700 m², it features lecture theatres, seminar rooms, laboratories, so-called SkillsLabs and a modern library. The Province of Burgenland has invested over €70 million.
The new campus also sets new standards in terms of sustainability: the building’s entire energy supply comes from renewable sources in the form of photovoltaic panels on almost all roofs, the Burgenland Energie green electricity grid and geothermal energy. The use of 183 deep probes, which reach deep into the earth, currently (as of 2026) makes the campus the largest geothermal project in Burgenland. These probes serve as an energy source in both winter and summer – that is, for heating and cooling.
Naturally, the comprehensive laboratory infrastructure in the fields of building, energy and environmental technology has been retained at the Pinkafeld Campus.
Energetikum: a two-storey experimental building serving as a full-scale test facility, offering the opportunity to further develop sustainable energy supply systems and storage technologies for buildings, taking real-world usage into account.
Lowergetikum: not particularly high-tech, but without compromising on comfort and with high ecological standards. The ‘low-tech’ construction method makes buildings less dependent on technology and provides comfort through the use of natural resources such as wind and sun. It is precisely these approaches that are being investigated in the building, which opened in 2022.
Pinkafeld is located at the foothills of the Wechsel massif at an altitude of 399 m directly on the A2 motorway. The town has around 5,200 inhabitants, covers a total area of 27.43 km² and is surrounded by healthy nature that invites you to go forest running, Nordic walking and extensive hikes.
Pinkafeld is a commercial and popular school town, since 1994 also a university of applied sciences town, with a wide range of leisure and sports facilities. Sports enthusiasts appreciate modern leisure facilities such as an indoor pool, outdoor pool, artificial ice rink and a sports centre (tennis, squash, sauna, solarium, steam bath, fitness centre). Away from sporting activities, the commercial businesses offer a stress-free shopping experience, and catering complements the offer. The Oberwart shopping centre is easily accessible.
As Pinkafeld is located in the thermal spa region, a trip to a thermal spa is possible at any time. The thermal baths in Bad Tatzmannsdorf are only about 10 kilometres away. Students have a student residence and numerous private accommodations near the University of Applied Sciences Study Centre at their disposal.
