91% of students and 88% of teachers use AI - but only half of them really utilise its potential. This Open Lecture provides a compact overview of the most important developments in 2025: deep research, agentic functions, ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini and NotebookLM as the discovery of the year.
But it's about more than just tools. How will our role as teachers change if the "homework apocalypse" becomes a reality? What does the erosion of written work as proof of competence mean for our examination culture? And how do we prepare students for a working world in which AI is a constant companion?
Barbara Geyer is Professor of E-Learning and Knowledge Management at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences, Head of the Master's degree programme in E-Learning and Knowledge Management and Head of the "Instructional Design" staff unit. She implements the integration of AI in teaching and examination formats herself and imparts this knowledge in continuing education. She regularly shares her theoretically sound and practice-orientated perspectives in online lectures, on LinkedIn and in her blog on Substack.
This update is for anyone who already uses AI and wants to understand what has changed and where the journey is heading.

Prof.in(FH) Mag.a(FH) Barbara Geyer, PhD
Programme Director, Master E-Learning and Knowledge Management
