A Journey of Transformation
Born in South Africa and living in Vienna he has been working in the restaurant industry since the late 1990s. Now, he is determined to actively contribute to making the industry more sustainable. One step on this journey is his Bachelor’s degree in International Sustainable Business at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland.
"During the lockdowns, I had time to reflect, particularly on sustainability in the hospitality sector," Johan explains. He began researching and came across the MAD Academy in Copenhagen. With a scholarship, he attended the programme, which completely transformed his view of the industry and his own career.
The next step led him to the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland, where Johan began his academic journey.

"Although I wasn’t a good student in school, I discovered my passion for learning here. The supportive and motivating environment on campus helped me gain confidence. This time has been incredibly inspiring for me, and I am determined to continue studying and learning."
Johan Steyn, Bachelor student International Sustainable Business
Beyond his studies, Johan has made the most of his time by furthering his education. He participated in summer programmes and online courses, including a summer school in Portugal and courses on topics such as restaurant sustainability, agriculture, and alternative economic systems. At BOKU (University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna), he attended the AEMS programme, which focuses on systems thinking, tipping points, and sustainable approaches.
The insights he gained from these experiences are profound:
"The food industry is deeply connected to everyone’s lives because food is provided by Earth and an entire industry is built around it. I’ve learned that sustainability is not just about the environment but also about social aspects – from procurement and delivery to governance and policy frameworks. What impressed me most was the realisation that everything is interconnected, and sustainable solutions are only possible through a holistic understanding of systems."
A key milestone on this journey was Johan’s introduction to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Previously, he had paid little attention to these goals, but the academic exploration of the topic helped him understand the connections between systems. A visit to the United Nations was particularly insightful in this regard.
Despite the challenges – Johan is older than the typical student, has a family, and must balance his studies with daily life – he is determined to make the most of his time at university.
His goal is to find meaningful work after graduation that aligns with his vision. He is already building a network that could open up opportunities for him. Johan wants to be part of the change and actively contribute to shaping systems.
His advice to other students: Take advantage of summer programmes to gain new perspectives and expand your qualifications. For Johan, one thing is clear: the journey of learning and transformation is far from over.
