Bachelor's degree in the bag: go straight on to a Master's degree or would you prefer to get a taste of a career?

Do you do a Master's straight after your Bachelor's so that you have it behind you and don't forget how to study? You can, but you don't have to.

For all those who already feel where they want to go during their bachelor's degree, it is definitely worth doing a master's degree programme as soon as possible. We can assure everyone else that taking a break from university is just as fine.

It often only becomes clear after a few years of working life in which direction you really want to specialise and where you want to fill gaps in your knowledge. In the podcast interview with two former students, we also look at the topic of professional reorientation and changing industries. In any case, our Master's degree programmes are all part-time (Fr afternoons, Saturdays all day) and can be optimally combined with your job.

5 tips for choosing a Master's programme

  • Gain work experience in advance
Many Master's degree programmes require professional experience and it is also more interesting or more tangible for you because you can optimally combine work and practice during your studies.
  • Compare the content of Bachelor's and Master's programmes
It makes less sense to choose a Master's degree programme where you hardly learn anything new - so compare the Bachelor's and Master's curricula in advance and seek advice! You can also cross study programmes, e.g. do a Bachelor's in IT and a Master's in Business. Simply take a look at the entry requirements and contact the student advisory service if you have any questions. Perhaps your Master's degree programme is also the occasion to reorient yourself professionally?
  • It's (not) all about the money
Don't complete your Master's degree just to move into a higher salary bracket. Not all companies automatically see a Master's as an opportunity to pay you more. So if you are aiming for a Master's degree primarily from a financial perspective, talk to your company in advance about your professional development so that you are not disappointed.
  • Manage your time wisely
Consider in advance whether you can invest enough time in a Master's degree programme - especially with regard to balancing your family, job, commute, hobbies and leisure time. In addition, some masters programmes recommend (but do not require) that you reduce your hours instead of working full-time. So even if it is a part-time Master's programme, you should not underestimate the workload. In this case, it is best to consult with your company: Would a reduction in working hours or educational leave be possible, for example?
  • Network with alumni
At FH Burgenland, you can make use of our alumni network during or after your Bachelor's degree programme. Visit our after-work events, for example, and get in touch with other graduates: What path did they take, where are they in their careers today? Intergenerational and cross-departmental dialogue can open up new perspectives for you.

Switch between departments at the FH

As a Bachelor's graduate at the FH Burgenland, you have the opportunity to switch between the areas and departments. We have compiled a detailed list of these.

Get an overview: Information platforms for choosing a degree programme

There are many platforms that provide you with an initial rough overview of the degree programmes on offer in Austria. You can filter and enter search queries according to your area of interest, federal state, organisational form (full-time, part-time, etc.), language or even directly by university.

Inform yourself personally: At fairs, online or at the InfoTag

Once you have decided on one or more subject areas, you can get an idea of the universities in person at information events. A good opportunity to do this is at fairs or the open day at the respective university or university of applied sciences.

Staff and students from FH Burgenland will also be present at the fair dates listed above to advise you if you come to us from an external university. You can find our full range of (online) counselling services on our website.
