What makes a bachelor's degree programme in healthcare and nursing so attractive, but also sometimes difficult, and what experiences do our students have? We asked two students, Denise and Julia, about this.
It's nothing new that healthcare professions require qualities such as perseverance and a hands-on mentality. It is often said that this is not just a profession, but that the job is a vocation. In any case, studying at the FH Burgenland gives you exactly the know-how you need to be able to put it into practice. There is currently also a growing awareness of systemically relevant jobs like these. However, there are many different reasons why our students choose to study at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences.
I decided to study Healthcare and Nursing at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences because a close family member was seriously chronically ill and I was able to witness from an early age how - above all good - care can have a positive impact on the lives of those affected.

I have already studied Health Management and Health Promotion at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences. So it was clear to me that I wanted to complete my training here this time too.

It's not just the work directly on and with people that never gets boring. There is always a need for well-trained specialist staff in the higher service. You do something meaningful and make a valuable contribution to society. The secure job prospects and future prospects are also very promising. There is a wide range of areas in which you can specialise.
Dealing with people and the variety of everyday life. No two days are the same.

I was very enthusiastic about the neurological field, especially in my final year, and it has shaped my future career.

With a high practical component, various specialisation options and teaching experts from a wide range of healthcare fields, the degree programme at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences provides a solid foundation for future career entry. During the courses, students not only learn pure theory, but also practise realistic situations in skills training, such as setting up infusions or feeding tubes. A degree programme that combines practical experience and professionally relevant science.
I don't know of any other degree programme with such a high practical component. In the final year, we are almost exclusively on work placement. For me, this was a reason to study GUK. The internships provide the necessary security for later professional life.

In my opinion, the opportunity to organise internships yourself gives you the best possible chance to get to know the diversity of our professional field and thus learn as much as possible. I always felt very well prepared for my internships thanks to the theoretical background knowledge.

In addition to an interest in healthcare, teamwork also plays an important role in the work of a healthcare and nursing professional. But which strengths are most in demand, according to the two students?
For me, the most important qualities in healthcare and nursing are a communicative, open and authentic way of dealing with patients and, of course, enjoying working with people.

However, many people probably realise that the job is not always easy. Every now and then there are moments when you doubt whether you are doing the right thing.
Of course, there are times when you are afraid: you doubt whether you are sufficiently prepared for an internship, but you are supported by most of the practical instructors. So far, I've been able to finish almost every internship with a good feeling.

Fear not directly. But through the internships you always come into contact with very moving and sometimes tragic fates. For my part, I try to live my own life more consciously as a result.

In any case, the positive aspects and experiences that you get to know and appreciate over time always outweigh the negative ones.
The practical lessons were always a highlight for me. You learn different nursing techniques with your fellow students in a relaxed atmosphere, which gives you more confidence for the upcoming internships.

The highlight of Denise's studies is actually somewhat unusual: she mentions the birth of her daughter. After becoming pregnant during her second year of training, she took a break for a year.
Now I am even prouder to be able to finish my training soon, hopefully successfully, as the balance between working full-time, being a student and being a mum at the same time is not always easy to find. However, I would always want to do it again and couldn't be happier!

I would start my studies again in a heartbeat because I have realised in the last three years how wonderful this profession can be. Of course, it can also be very stressful, but you always get a lot of gratitude back from the patients. You also realise, especially in such difficult times, that this profession has a future. You always have job security.

I would choose the programme again in a heartbeat because I come home with a smile after every day of my internship and know that it's exactly what makes me happy.

Although Julia has not yet decided exactly where she will work after graduating, she has already had a few job interviews, which make her very positive about the future. Denise would also like to find a job after her bachelor's degree where she can actually provide high-quality care. "I think I've already found one," she says.

Qualified healthcare and nursing staff have the opportunity to complete an upgrade programme at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences and the AIM - Austrian Institute of Management to become an academic expert in healthcare and nursing. Successful completion of the academic course also offers the opportunity to enter the 6th semester of the Bachelor's degree programme in Healthcare and Nursing at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences and to obtain a Bachelor's degree, provided the admission requirements for the Bachelor's degree programme in Healthcare and Nursing are met. Applicants without a university entrance qualification can obtain this in parallel as part of the course via the preparatory course at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences.
