Rebecca Zapfel found her way into technology at an early age and decided to attend a technical college while still at school. In terms of subject and geography, the HTL Pinkafeld was the obvious choice. She was fascinated by building technology from the very beginning, and later her interest in sustainability and environmental issues grew.

After graduating from high school, she wanted to start putting her knowledge into practice straight away. Studying was also on her agenda, so she chose the part-time Bachelor's degree programme in Building and Energy Technology at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland in Pinkafeld.

She joined STRABAG AG's Central Engineering department straight after completing her A-levels. Since then, she has mainly worked as a project technician in planning and deals with 3D modelling as well as calculations and designs for heating, cooling, ventilation and sanitation. "I really enjoy the job. It was definitely the right decision and is well compatible with my studies."

During her studies, she appreciates the strong practical relevance and the focus on digitalisation: dealing with different software is crucial for her profession. She can contribute her professional experience to digital planning projects as part of a team. She is devoting her bachelor's thesis to a BIM-based life cycle analysis: she is using the 3D model of a technical building to assess its production, construction and utilisation.

In the future, she plans to complete a Master's degree programme. She is deliberately leaving the specific specialisation open. Professionally, she would like to stay in the industry and develop even more in the direction of sustainability.

Examination phases are particularly demanding in the part-time degree programme, but the cohesion in the cohort is great and carries you through intense times. Her conclusion for prospective students is clear:

"The building sector offers excellent prospects in a field with great leverage. This is where I want to make my contribution."
