In addition to teaching maths and music, his digital skills are particularly in demand there. The teacher is studying for a part-time Master's degree in e-learning and knowledge management at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences, where he is gaining valuable input. His expertise was particularly in demand during the coronavirus crisis.
‘From around 9 March, I started thinking about how we could organise home schooling,’ says Kai Hebein. Using Google Classroom seemed like the ideal choice to him. With his head teacher on board, a very intensive week began for Kai. ‘From Wednesday to Friday, I set up the whole school, created accounts for all classes and also recorded videos for training.’
He used short tutorials to document his work for colleagues and pupils. Some of his videos were viewed up to 1,000 times in these first two weeks.

I have received a lot of feedback from teachers from all over Austria and have supported seven other schools in Vienna in setting up distance learning.

Kai operates according to the principle of ‘working out loud’, which also plays a major role in his studies at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences. His motto: ‘Sharing is caring - why not share what you know or can do? My degree programme has definitely shown me that.’
He has also been able to support the Federal Ministry with a virtual lecture series. What he is particularly pleased about: ‘Many colleagues want to continue using digital methods and older colleagues can now also imagine it as a supplement.’
