The Haring family is a perfect example of how University of Applied Sciences Burgenland successfully brings university and family together. From their first meeting to their joint choice of degree programme and the birth of their daughter, the University of Applied Sciences played a key role for Marlies and Florian Haring. The two met several years ago through a fellow student. They are now married and have a daughter named Annemarie.
When the couple were accepted onto the Master's degree programme in Business Process Engineering & Management together in 2017, it quickly became clear that they would not be alone for long. Daughter Annemarie was already on her way. This did not stop the two students in their studies - quite the opposite.
The parents-to-be informed programme director Silke Palkovits-Rauter about their soon-to-be offspring. She was delighted for them and encouraged them to continue their studies. "Silke was delighted and congratulated us straight away. She always gave us 100% support throughout our studies," says dad Florian enthusiastically.
On 19 December 2017, the time had finally come. Annemarie was born and from the summer semester of 2018, she attended the teaching units of her Master's degree programme together with her parents.
The on-site infrastructure at the study centre, such as the parent-child room, made it easier for them to organise their daily study routine and to take Annemarie with them to classes. The couple took it in turns to look after her or change her nappies. Annemarie's grandparents and godmother Anni also looked after her for a few hours on campus, took her for walks or played with her in the parent-child room. Everyone always got together again during the breaks.
Annemarie was always there and was fully accepted and respected by all our fellow students. They even organised a small internal party for her, gave us a voucher for nappies and looked after her when we gave our presentations.

It wasn't just her fellow students who were particularly impressed by Annemarie, but also the lecturers.
"Even though some of the lectors were surprised at first, they all supported us in the end and there were never any problems. Everyone was very open and understanding," says Marlies Haring. "Some even held the lecture with Annemarie on their arm."
Special highlights for the Haring family also included oral examinations, which Annemarie attended.
Annemarie was so well-behaved and calm that it didn't affect or disrupt the exam in any way. Sabine Hoffmann from Office Management was also very happy to look after her and play with her during an exam.

With all the solidarity, good organisation and support that the Haring family received from all sides, it was finally possible for Marlies and Florian Haring to successfully complete their Master's degree in Business Process Engineering & Management within the standard period of study on 23 September 2019. But it wasn't just mum and dad who received their diploma.
Annemarie was also presented with a diploma by programme director Silke Palkovits-Rauter. The small family is particularly proud of this. Because it is further confirmation that you can achieve anything together with the right motivation.
Annemarie was literally part of our year group from the very beginning and grew up with us. We were lucky that everything worked out so smoothly.

When Annemarie was big enough and mobile enough, she ended up staying with her grandparents for the remaining attendance dates. Marlies and Florian organised their time perfectly as usual, not only for studying but also for writing their Master's theses, and everything went according to plan.
The Haring family is still very happy with their decision to complete a Master's degree programme at the FH Burgenland. They always felt welcome with their daughter and greatly appreciate the accommodating attitude of FH Burgenland.
The fact that we were able to organise everything so well was of course due to our helpers, but also to the fact that we received our fixed timetable at least a year in advance and were able to plan specifically.

The parent-child room is still very familiar to Annemarie today. Back then, when she was still breastfeeding, Marlies was very happy to have a place to retreat to. Now that the little one is older, the room mainly scores with the wide range of toys on offer. Annemarie is now almost two years old and a very open and happy girl. We are excited to see whether we will be able to welcome her back to our campus as an official student in the distant future when the time is right.
We are already known for this motto:"FH Burgenland brings something special together" . And we are always pleased to see that this slogan is really lived and implemented here.
