#GoodbyePinkafeld - My internship abroad
About the person
Sophia is 21 years old and is in the 5th semester of the Bachelor's degree programme in Healthcare and Nursing. She spent her last two internships in Berlin and Switzerland!
The Bachelor's degree programme is training her to become a competent specialist in healthcare and nursing and, in addition to the academic degree, also provides her with a professional qualification.
Why did you actually decide to do an internship abroad?
I chose my internships abroad purely out of personal interest. I just wanted to try something new, and of course I was particularly interested in the differences in treatment and the various healthcare systems.
At the beginning, I applied to several healthcare institutions. Mostly in German-speaking countries, of course, as the medical terminology and, above all, the patients' concerns are of great importance. That's why I ended up working in Germany and Switzerland.
What were your tasks during your internship in Berlin and why did you choose Berlin?
I chose Berlin because I always wanted to work in a big city, as the clinical pictures there vary quite a bit. I completed my internship in the psychiatric ward of the Jewish Hospital Berlin, where I was based in the addiction department. I was very well integrated into the nursing team and the nursing staff also had a great relationship with the doctors.
Did you notice any differences to Austria?
I didn't notice many nursing differences compared to Austria.
The only thing I noticed in Berlin was that many of the documents that are already all electronic here were still filed on paper there.
What was your area of work in Switzerland?
I was assigned to the cardiology ward and here, too, I was very well integrated into the team. I was allowed to work independently and also had my own patients.
Would you recommend an internship abroad? Is there anything you could take away from your internships?
I would really recommend anyone to do an internship abroad.
I am very, very glad that I did mine. My two internships were really great and I not only gained new experiences, but also made new friends.
