Anna Balla studied tourism management in Salzburg, worked for a year on a cruise ship and abroad.

She then took a job in the marketing department of a hotel in Vienna, but then came corona and with it short-time working for the hotel industry. "I had time to do some research and focussed on my interests," says Anna. In her search for a degree programme that optimally combined the fields of international affairs and marketing, she found what she was looking for in the Master's degree programme in International Business Relations at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences.

She chose Russian as a foreign language for her degree programme and explains: "Unfortunately, excursions to Russia were not possible due to the current situation. But our professor still managed to give us a feel for the country and its people and to develop our intercultural skills."

The highlight of her degree programme was the practical subjects.

It's just great that the lecturers come from a practical background. For example, we drew up a business plan together with young female founders. And basically, I thought the communication at eye level was great.

Anna's six years of professional experience between her Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes were particularly valuable. "I was able to take part in discussions and contribute my own experience."

The study period also involved a change of job. In 2021, Anna was also hired by a media agency where two fellow students were already working. Anna Balla has remained loyal to the agency industry ever since and is very happy with it. "Agency life can definitely be compared to the hotel industry," she says: "There's a lot of interaction with colleagues in a fast-paced environment, with a lot of internationality and cool clients."
