It's worth it

Manuel Nährer is already employed during his studies in healthcare and nursing.

"It's something I'm really grateful for and something many friends envy me for," he says. (Note: Since autumn 2022, healthcare and nursing students in Austria have received 600 euros net 12 times a year. Students at FH Burgenland also have the opportunity to be employed by healthcare organisations in Burgenland during their studies and thus be fully insured for three years. The province of Burgenland supports the prospective nursing staff 14 times a year with an additional 600 euros gross. Those who opt for this option undertake to remain working in Burgenland after completing their studies - at least for the number of years for which they have received the financial subsidy).

Manuel is in his third semester and has therefore reached the halfway point of his degree programme.

It is a very demanding degree programme. It's a lot of work, but it's been absolutely worth it so far.

So far, he has spent his internships in long-term care and home nursing. How did he get into the care sector in the first place? "I've been in the volunteer fire brigade since I was 11 years old." Manuel had repeated contact with the emergency services and then decided to spend a voluntary social year with the Red Cross. His interest in the medical sector was already there at the time. Nevertheless, he first began studying to become a business consultant. He soon realised that this wasn't really his thing. "I missed the contact with patients and then decided to study healthcare and nursing - so far I'm very happy with my decision."

What is it like to be a man in a female domain? Whether with colleagues or patients - Manuel is appreciated and positively received. His decision was also respected by his friends right from the start.

He advises young people not to be put off by negative media reports. "Fortunately, I had personal contact with people in the care sector who were able to give me an authentic insight into their day-to-day work. Of course, the profession is challenging and exhausting, but if you are passionate and interested, you won't lack motivation for your studies and everyday working life."
An interest in other people is important for the job.
