Learning about wine in Burgenland
The unique Master's degree programme in International Wine Marketing at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences and her love of travelling are the reasons why she is currently spending three months with us in Eisenstadt. She is the first scholarship holder at her university, the Technical University in Brno, via the Austria - Czech Republic programme.
Her academic career led her straight into a career via a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Company Management and Economics. "But after a few years, I started to miss something," says Iva. "The daily routine wasn't for me. I wanted to grow, learn, get to know the world and lead others to do the same. So after eight years, I went back to university and am now a third-year PhD student."
Why did she decide to do research on family businesses? "Because I work in a family business myself and the special features of family businesses are very inspiring and interesting to me," she explains. "And I came to wine through my dissertation supervisor, Professor Korab, who has been researching family businesses in the wine sector worldwide for decades."
She also found an important supporter for her further research in Marcus Wieschhoff, the head of the degree programme at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences.

The people here are very nice and friendly. The consultations with Professor Wieschhoff gave me a lot of support in writing my dissertation. He helped me to broaden my scientific horizons.
Iva Straková, PhD student
In January, she will take part in courses on the Master's programme in International Wine Marketing and also present her research.
Her professional goals: She is by no means deterred by her research into family businesses, as she would like to take over her parents' family business in the long term. In the field of education, she wants to work as a lecturer in corporate training and teach at a university.
