Study or go to work? Does studying pay off at all? And if you decide to study, which field should you choose?

These days, Austria's high school graduates are spoilt for choice, with over 3,500 degree programmes available, and the number is constantly growing. In this article, we provide you with a compass to help you find the right path for yourself.

(Not) studying after the A-levels

Once the first major milestone is behind them, school leavers are often at a loss at the beginning of their post-school journey. Should you work, study, or even take a gap year? Unfortunately, we can't give you the answer to that either: you have to find it within yourself.

In any case, it is important to research thoroughly, try out different options, and get to the bottom of your personal interests (important: not the interests of your parents or friends). In this blog post, we therefore present helpful interest tests, sources of information, and a checklist to support your choice of degree programme.

Identifying Your Interests: What Are Your Strengths?

Ideally, your interests and strengths will determine your career direction. If you still have a lot of question marks in your head about where you want to go, we can recommend our survey on this topic: We asked our programme directors for tips on how to find the right path for you.

Interest tests for choosing a career and degree programme can also be very helpful. Here is an overview of three well-known platforms:

Get an Overview: Information Platforms for Choosing a Degree Programme

There are many platforms that provide you with an initial overview of the degree programmes available in Austria. You can filter by area of interest, federal state, type of study (full-time, part-time, etc.), language, or even search directly by university.

Experience It First-Hand: At Fairs, Online, or at an Info Day

Once you have decided on one or more subject areas, you can get an idea of the universities in person at information events. Trade fairs or open days at the respective university or university of applied sciences are a good opportunity.

Staff and students from Burgenland University of Applied Sciences will also be available to advise you on the dates listed above. You can find our regular (online) counselling services on the website.
