Studying IT was the best decision

Computer science was Nicole Marhold's favourite subject at school.

At first she worked with Word and PowerPoint, but soon the content became more technical and she began to take an interest in programming languages. The decision in favour of a technical degree course was quickly made, and the FH Burgenland was her first choice.

Studying the Bachelor's degree programme in IT Infrastructure Management was the best decision. It gave us a good foundation.

The most memorable aspect of the programme was the high level of practical relevance. ‘We were often in the lab, which gave us a better understanding of computer science. I therefore felt really well prepared for the world of work.’  The student also really appreciates the friendly and informal atmosphere at Burgenland UAS. ‘We have direct contact with the lecturers. The lessons take place in small groups.’

Nicole gained work experience during internships at Forschung Burgenland and Österreichische Kontrollbank, among others. After graduating, she got a job in IT security at the Hospital of the Brothers of Mercy in Eisenstadt and is very happy with it.

I work in a great team. There are 12 of us and I'm the only woman, but I'm very happy working in a male-dominated environment. I find working in a ‘man's world’ very easy and I know it from my studies. I feel comfortable.

At the same time as starting her job, Nicole also decided to continue her studies on the Master's programme in Cloud Computing Engineering.

‘IT is a very big subject and you can specialise in a lot of things. The courses on IT security and forensics made me very curious.’ She would like to write her Master's thesis on cyber risks in the healthcare sector.

It is important to Nicole to pass on the following message to young women and girls: ‘A technical job is not only exciting for men - women are also very welcome there. The degree programme opened the door for me. You could dare to go for it. You don't have to be afraid of it.’
