Unforgettable time
Janine Schrahböck is a full-time student on the Bachelor's degree programme in Information, Media and Communication at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences. Like almost a third of her class, she spent the last summer semester abroad.
She spent five months in Helsinki, Finland, gaining lots of great experiences.
"Looking back, I can only say that I will never forget this exciting, thrilling and impressive time. During this six-month period, I was able to meet lots of great new people and cultures, attend exciting courses and experience many adventures," she says.
"I have grown very fond of the city of Helsinki. With its pleasant atmosphere and many opportunities, it was great fun to explore the city and the surrounding area. Although Helsinki is a capital city, everything is very green (at least in summer) and the nearest large park or forest is only a few minutes away by public transport. I also really enjoyed spending time in the great national parks. The nature paradises were also very easy to reach by public transport and are a space for exercise and tranquillity."
The university where Janine studied had a lot to offer. She raves about the modern classrooms, flexibility in teaching and exciting content. "One of the biggest highlights of my stay was definitely our trip to Lapland. We had the opportunity to spend 6 days in the north of Finland with a travel agency. During that time, we got to go husky sledding, meet reindeer and enjoy the beautiful nature while cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or skiing. One evening we were so happy that the sky was magically green above us. We were able to marvel at the beautiful northern lights above us and see countless stars."
Of course, there were also things that were a little challenging. In particular, the darkness and the large amounts of snow took some getting used to for the young student.

Finland is a great country that has a lot to offer. Above all, there are many public opportunities to do sports. I always enjoyed playing ice hockey and I almost felt at home on the ice among the friendly and helpful Finns. In conclusion, I can only recommend a semester abroad. It's a great opportunity to get to know new cultures and people and also to further your studies with new impressions and skills. If you have the opportunity, I would definitely take it as you not only learn a lot for life, but also broaden your own horizons.
