His enthusiasm for computers began at a young age and continued to grow during his time at HAK Eisenstadt, where he specialised in IT. It was there that he gained his first experience in programming and began writing code in JavaScript.
After completing his school-leaving examinations, Marcel faced a difficult decision: business or computer science? He initially chose to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in European Economics and Business Management at the BFI University of Applied Sciences in Vienna. During the course of his studies, however, his interests gradually shifted more and more towards computer science.
I find it very stimulating to take a holistic view of processes and identify ways to optimise them. In particular, developing a deeper understanding of data-driven engineering has really sparked my interest.

This makes him all the more enthusiastic about the Master’s programme in Business Process Engineering and Management at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences, which will allow him to combine both areas of interest. It was the specialisation in data-driven engineering in particular that caught his attention: “I also enjoy tracking data in my spare time and find it a fascinating field.” It comes as no surprise, then, that his friends and family would describe him as a pragmatic person who enjoys analysing patterns and relationships, keeping track of developments and making rational decisions.
Professionally, the 23-year-old currently works as a junior SAP software developer at Gesundheit Burgenland: “This really has been a dream come true for me.” Since the beginning of this year, he has been developing bespoke SAP solutions for a clinical environment, managing interfaces between different systems and contributing to various projects. His day-to-day work shows him just how crucial well-designed processes are to the success of organisations and teams. This is precisely why he sees the Master’s programme as the ideal next step in his academic and professional development. Several of his colleagues have also already completed the programme at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences.
Marcel is convinced: “It’s a privilege to be overwhelmed by doing what you’ve always wanted to do.” This thought helps him through particularly challenging days. One of the qualities he values most about himself is his willingness to try new things and continuously develop new skills.
Alongside the programme’s core subject areas, Marcel is particularly looking forward to exchanging ideas and experiences with fellow students from a wide range of industries and professional backgrounds: “This offers a truly valuable opportunity to broaden your horizons and learn from one another – regardless of where you are in your career.”
