Gernot Steindl appointed as university professor

Gernot Steindl, Director of the Master’s Degree Programme in AI Solution Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland, was formally awarded the title of Professor (FH).

Eisenstadt, 17 September 2026. One cannot apply for this title; one must be nominated for it. The requirements for a professorship at the University of Applied Sciences include academic training, teaching experience at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland, relevant professional experience, applied research and development activities, and outstanding contributions to the development of the university.

Gernot Steindl, born in 1985, graduated from the HTL in Eisenstadt, specialising in mechatronics, and subsequently studied electrical engineering at the Vienna University of Technology, specialising in computer engineering. Professionally, he worked as a software developer for embedded systems, for example on control software for harbour gantry cranes.

He later moved into research, initially at Forschung Burgenland, where his work focused on building services and energy technology. Whilst working, he completed the Master’s Degree Programme in Building Services Engineering and Building Management at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland’s Pinkafeld campus . At the Vienna University of Technology, Steindl completed his PhD at the Faculty of Computer Science within the ‘Smart Industrial Concepts’ doctoral programme, focusing on digital twins for industrial energy systems, for which he received the Burgenland University Award in 2021.

He subsequently worked at the Institute of Computer Engineering in the Automation Systems division, where he led courses and supervised national and international research projects. He has remained associated with Burgenland University of Applied Sciences for many years through teaching and research projects, and has been Programme Director of the new AI Solution Engineering programme since April 2025.

In this Master’s degree programme, Steindl combines his many years of research experience with the training of future AI experts. The focus is on the development of intelligent, trustworthy and sustainable AI solutions, as well as their integration into real-world technical systems. His research also focuses on so-called hybrid or neurosymbolic AI approaches, which combine data-driven methods such as machine learning and generative AI with formal knowledge and symbolic methods. Key areas of application here include industry, buildings and energy systems. The latest research findings and experience gained from joint projects with companies are incorporated directly into the programme’s teaching.
