The Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research honoured University of Applied Sciences Burgenland with the "Diversitas" inclusion award. This was awarded to seven higher education and research institutions for their outstanding achievements in the field of diversity. Burgenland received 12,500 euros for a course specifically aimed at technology students.

Eisenstadt/Pinkafeld, December 3, 2024: On the recommendation of an independent jury of experts, the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland was awarded a recognition prize worth 12,500 euros for the course "Gender & Diversity in Technology" in the bachelor's degree programmes Applied Electronics and Photonics, Energy and Environmental Management and Building and Energy Technology. Particularly in the heavily male-dominated technical field, it is important that forward-looking technological solutions are designed with diversity in mind, as they are used equally by all members of society.

In the course, students acquire knowledge of the legal foundations and methods of diversity management and develop their own case studies with content related to their degree programmes.

With the structure of the course "Knowledge - Recognition - Action", we send students into the professional field with a high level of diversity awareness and methodological knowledge.

Elke Szalai, Lecturer

Szalai is one of the lecturers responsible for the conception and realisation of the course. Around 200 students a year benefit from attending the class.

Unique offer in Austria

This course integrates social aspects into technical training specialisations.

Rector Gernot Hanreich

Hanreich also heads the Department of Energy & Environment at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences. The course provides students with a basic understanding of their own contribution to sustainable development in their fields of activity and encourages critical (self-) reflection.

The course "Gender & Diversity in Engineering" is unique in the Austrian  university landscape. Teaching relevant content in technical degree programmes makes an important contribution to the future development of non-discriminatory technology. In addition, the integration of such courses promotes an inclusive university culture. The prize money will be used for various measures in the area of diversity and equality.

Gender & diversity at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland

A separate staff unit is dedicated to the topic of gender and diversity at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences. Integration into teaching is set out in the institution's equality plan and also plays a key role in the 2030 strategy paper. The teaching staff regularly develop the award-winning course in line with student feedback.
