Patient care: Cooperation must be learnt
Pinkafeld, 30 September 2025. The first course on interprofessional team building of the academic year recently took place at the Pinkafeld campus. Eighty first-year students from the bachelor’s programs in occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and physiotherapy spent a day together with one shared goal: to ensure comprehensive, high-quality care for patients in their future professional lives. At least seven further courses of this kind will follow during their studies, as the Department strengthens its focus on cross-disciplinary collaboration.
A successful start to your studies
In an interactive station-based format on campus, students had the opportunity to explore therapy and assistive devices as well as facilities from the other programs. “I really like the concept of joint courses with other programs, and I can imagine that this will help me in my future profession,” said physiotherapy student Carina Krammer.
Close collaboration between occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and physiotherapy is indispensable in many areas of healthcare – for example in neurology or pediatrics, where the different therapy approaches are especially intertwined. Whether in rehabilitation centers, hospitals, or private practice: interprofessional teamwork will be an everyday reality for the healthcare professionals of tomorrow.
A must in modern healthcare
The increased emphasis on interprofessional collaboration is a defining feature of the practice-oriented bachelor’s and master’s degree programs at the Department of Health & Social Affairs at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland. In addition to mutual exchange, joint courses cover topics such as communication, the framework of the Austrian healthcare system, as well as therapy-specific subjects. Midwifery students and nursing students take part, as do students of biomedical science, radiological technology, and master’s students in healthcare management.

"Better communication and interdisciplinary therapy approaches among the professional groups increase the efficiency of treatment, prevent duplication and will simply be part of the job description of the future."
Erwin Gollner, Head of Department Health & Social Affairs
