Research picnic for schoolchildren

At the research picnic at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences, 40 schoolchildren experienced just how exciting learning from researchers can be.

Just like real researchers, 40 schoolchildren from Allhau and Bernstein secondary schools worked at the Pinkafeld university campus to find answers to the question of how we can all use energy sustainably and conserve resources.

Pinkafeld, 26 May 2025: To achieve the energy transition, we all need to be on board. Raising awareness among children at an early age and using them to influence their parents is the aim of a research project from the Department of Energy & Environment at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences, which is being funded by the FFG as part of the "Talente regional" programme. To this end, workshops are being organised in several schools in Burgenland to impart knowledge and, above all, have fun. One highlight of the co-operation is the visit of the schoolchildren to the university as part of research picnics.

Learning from real researchers

Where does our energy actually come from and how can we use it sustainably and conserve resources? The children explored these questions in age-appropriate workshops led by energy, environmental and building technology experts from Burgenland University of Applied Sciences.

The children explored the following areas

  • Acoustics - what is noise and how do I measure it?
  • Temperature - when do I feel comfortable?
  • Materials for building and insulating - what grows back and what do I have to be careful with?
  • Photonics - understanding light and using it for data transmission, for example
  • and they calculated their own ecological footprint - how many earths would we actually need if we lived the way we currently do?

The following schools are taking part in the wwww - how do we want to live project: the Pinkafeld technical college, the new secondary schools in Markt Allhau and Bernstein, the primary schools in Markt Allhau and Bernstein and the Markt Allhau kindergarten. A total of around 110 children are involved in the project.

Additional information: For those interested, there are still places available in the Department of Energy & Environment for a course starting in autumn. Information and registration at www.hochschule-burgenland.at.
