Running for climate protection
Pinkafeld/Vienna, 24 June 2025 - "Finally getting into action" is something you often hear when it comes to climate change. One of those who really take action is Stephan Neuberger from Burgenland. His passion for sustainability led him to Burgenland University of Applied Sciences 15 years ago, where he graduated with a degree in Energy and Environmental Management. Now he is organising the first Vienna Climate Run and is literally getting climate protection moving.
His idea is as simple as it is effective: kilometres for climate protection. Participants not only run for their own health, but also send a strong signal for the preservation of our planet. "It's about raising awareness and at the same time making an active contribution to climate protection and biodiversity," explains Neuberger. "Every step counts - for us and for future generations." The 1.5 degree target, which was agreed at the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference, runs like a common thread through the event. The laps to be run are 1.5 kilometres long, 1.5 m2 of forest is protected per lap run, etc.
Studies with a long-term effect
Stephan Neuberger's commitment was fuelled from a young age by the practical training at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences and the focus on future-oriented topics such as sustainability and climate protection.

The Burgenland University of Applied Sciences has shown me how important it is to take responsibility and actively develop solutions for the challenges of our time.

The interdisciplinary approach and the dialogue with experts from various fields in particular motivated him to make a contribution himself. Since his student days, Stephan Neuberger has also been heavily involved in the NGOs panSol and SOL, which advocate a solidary, ecological lifestyle and are the sponsoring organisations of the run.
Running, learning and inspiring
In addition to the run itself, there will be a varied supporting programme on 15 October 2025 on the Prater Hauptallee in Vienna with interviews with CEOs and celebrities, games and information stands that deal with the topics of climate protection and sustainable lifestyles. "We don't just want to run, we also want to inspire and take people with us through positive emotions," says Neuberger. The event is aimed at everyone - from amateur runners to ambitious athletes, from families with children to committed environmentalists. "It's important to us that everyone can take part. Climate protection affects us all, and every contribution counts." The proceeds from the event will be invested in sustainable projects that directly benefit climate protection and biodiversity. The Burgenland University of Applied Sciences is impressed by the graduate's great commitment. The university's own running teams for the event are currently being formed.
Note: there are still a few remaining places available in the Department of Energy & Environment at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences for a course starting in autumn. Information and registration at www.hochschule-burgenland.at.
