Second chance: Studying without a "Matura"

Students group

The preparatory course at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences paves the way to a degree programme for people without a school-leaving certificate.

A free preparatory course at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences leads directly to a degree programme and enables students to gain higher qualifications while working. There are still places available for September.

Pinkafeld, 29 July 2025 Sometimes things don't work out the first time, life circumstances change or age simply makes you wiser. Fortunately, studying is not impossible for people without a school-leaving certificate. For many years now, Burgenland University of Applied Sciences has been offering a free, one-year preparatory course to qualify for a Bachelor's degree programme. The transfer rate is high again this year. Many of the 24 participants on the part-time course are planning to start their studies in autumn. If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, the registration deadline for the 2025/2026 preparatory course is 31 August!

Studying is possible

One of the strengths of Burgenland University of Applied Sciences is the high proportion of part-time degree programmes. Almost 70% of current students have chosen this option. The proportion of regular students at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences who find their way into the degree programme without a conventional school-leaving examination is 14%. The free preparatory course has ensured increased permeability here for years. The university also offers the opportunity to prepare for the university entrance qualification examination.

Your way to university

The preparatory course is aimed at people with relevant professional qualifications for the relevant degree programme. As a rule, this means a relevant apprenticeship qualification or a qualification from a relevant vocational secondary school. Additional examinations can be taken at the end of the course for all Bachelor's degree programmes at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences. Preparation for this takes place on two to three weekends (Friday afternoon and Saturday) per month alongside work. The course starts in mid-September and registration is possible until 31 August.

Course opens up new career opportunities

Course participant Nadine Limbeck has decided to completely reorient herself professionally. The preparatory course at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences paved the way for her. After attending the free, part-time course, she is now a big step closer to her goal of becoming a healthcare and nursing professional. She will start her bachelor's degree in autumn.

Nadine Limbeck

Everyone at the university was so supportive. You get the feeling from all the teaching staff that it's really important to them that you succeed. You're not a number here. The team spirit among us colleagues was also great. We have travelled this path together.

Nadine Limbeck, participant in the preparatory course

She wants to encourage others: "Leaving your comfort zone and jumping in at the deep end isn't easy, but it's definitely worth it. We will all have to work for so many years to come, so we should do something we enjoy."

University entrance qualification examination also possible

For some years now, it has also been possible to prepare for the university entrance qualification examination at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences. This is not taken for a specific degree programme, but for a group of degree programmes. The acquired university entrance qualification certificate is valid for any university, university of applied sciences or university of applied sciences at which a degree programme of the respective study direction group has been established. The prerequisites for passing a university entrance qualification examination are the age of 20 and successful vocational or extra-occupational prior education for the desired degree programme that clearly goes beyond the fulfilment of compulsory schooling.
