Start-up aid for medical studies

Medical student in the lab

High school graduates from Burgenland will once again receive free support during the Easter holidays or on school-free days in their preparation for the entrance test to study medicine. The courses take place at the study centres of the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland.

Eisenstadt/Pinkafeld, 17 February 2026 – Demand for coveted medical study places in Austria remains consistently high. Nationwide, however, in 2025 only one in seven applications actually resulted in a study place. For ten years now, Burgenland University of Applied Sciences has been supporting students from Burgenland in preparing for the admission test (MedAT-H) on behalf of the Burgenland Health Fund. Governor Hans Peter Doskozil: “The free MedAT preparation course enables young people from Burgenland to prepare thoroughly for the medical admission test, regardless of their financial situation. This specifically increases their chances of securing a study place while also strengthening long-term medical care in Burgenland.”

"The success proves us right," says a delighted Erwin Gollner, Head of the Department of Health & Social Affairs at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences. The success rate for graduates of the preparatory course at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences was 1:4 in the previous year. "This means that almost one in four course participants was able to secure a place at university."

Students benefit from insider tips

This year, too, the preparation courses offered by the province in cooperation with Burgenland University of Applied Sciences are free of charge. Once again, current medical students who previously completed the course at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences will provide insider tips.

Highly qualified instructors have designed a comprehensive program for the preparation courses. An interdisciplinary team from the fields of medicine, natural sciences, social sciences, and psychology has been assembled by the university. As in previous years, the number of hours dedicated to social-emotional competencies has been increased, as this section of the exam carries greater weight again this year. During the Easter holidays, classes will be held over five days at the university’s study centers, with additional online sessions offered in April. The course concludes on 19 June with an online test simulation for optimal preparation for the MedAT-H.

The cooperation with www.MedBreaker.one has also proven effective. It allows participants to use a smartphone app for learning on the go.
