UAS Burgenland presents its first Sustainability Report
Eisenstadt/Pinkafeld, 15th of October 2024 – "What we do today will determine what the world looks like tomorrow." This quote from Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach graces the cover of UAS Burgenland’s first sustainability report. In over 200 pages, the university presents a comprehensive picture of its daily efforts across all areas, aimed at creating a future worth living for people, animals, and the environment.

We strongly identify with our region and its values. This gives rise to our responsibility to promote the common good and play an active role in addressing socially relevant issues.
Georg Pehm, Managing Director of UAS Burgenland
With this report, the UAS Burgenland Group, consisting of UAS Burgenland and its subsidiaries UAS Burgenland Continuing Education, Research Burgenland, and the Burgenland Academy, concludes a multi-year process. The report’s development began in September 2023 and was completed by the end of April 2024. The reporting period covers the financial years 2021/22 and 2022/23.
Important role of sustainability at UAS Burgenland
For more than 30 years, energy and environmental topics have been at the forefront of studying and research at the university, particularly at the Pinkafeld campus. In 2020, UAS Burgenland also established a dedicated department for sustainability. Since autumn 2023, the university has been offering Austria’s first Bachelor’s degree programme in business administration with a strong focus on sustainability. Additionally, UAS Burgenland plays a leading role in the Sustainable Universities Association and participates in the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).
Renewable energy, paperless university

Decisions in the interest of sustainability shape the work, teaching, learning, and research across all areas of the institution.
UAS Burgenland rector, Gernot Hanreich
Hanreich himself heads the Department of Energy & Environment, which has been committed to sustainability since 1993. The university covers a significant portion of its energy needs through photovoltaic systems and is on its way towards becoming a paperless university, as emphasised by the management. Responsible procurement and supply chains are just as crucial as collaborations with institutions at home and abroad to achieve sustainability goals.
