Under the sign of X-rays: Oberwart Clinic invited to the Radiology Day

To mark International Radiology Day on 8 November, Oberwart Hospital, in collaboration with the Department of Health & Social Affairs at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences, once again commemorated the discovery of X-rays and everything associated with them in medicine.

The Department of Radiology used the Awareness Day on 7 November to present the variety of professions in radiology and to arouse interest in this forward-looking field. More than 200 Burgenland schoolchildren and other interested parties were given exciting insights into the day-to-day work of the most modern radiology department in the country.

"Modern medicine would not be what it is today without the numerous possibilities offered by imaging techniques," says Dr Herbert Ringhofer, Head of the Radiology Network at Gesundheit Burgenland. "Radiology plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases by providing precise, life-saving insights into the human body," explains the radiologist. In addition to the standard X-ray machines, the radiology department at Oberwart Clinic also has an MRI scanner, an angiography machine for visualising blood vessels and a state-of-the-art photon CT scanner - a device of the latest generation that scores points for its higher image quality, lower radiation dose and faster examination times.

Info day with many highlights

On Friday, one day before World Radiology Day, the radiology staff provided insights into their day-to-day work. Several hands-on stations allowed visitors to immerse themselves in the profession, for example at the ultrasound station or the cardiac catheterisation training station. Here, interested visitors learnt how to assist with an angiography, how to access a vein or set a sterile operating table - some of the tasks of radiology technicians. Barbara Friedrich, Head Radiology Technologist at Oberwart Clinic and organiser of the information day: "I am delighted that we have been able to hold this day for the third time. We want to raise awareness of our profession, which is often in the background, and encourage young people to take up this varied and interesting profession."

Professional Training in Burgenland

A special highlight of the campaign day was the cooperation with the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences, where the Bachelor's degree programme in Radiological Technology was launched for the first time at the Pinkafeld campus in September 2025. The aim of this collaboration is not only to inspire young people for this responsible profession, but also to secure the supply of qualified specialists in the state in the long term. David Rupprecht, BSc MA MSc MBA CMC, Head of the new Bachelor's degree programme in Radiological Technology at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences, is also enthusiastic: "The fascinating thing about radiology is that it makes the invisible visible. Radiological technologists form the bridge between medicine, state-of-the-art technology and patients. This enables them to provide crucial insights for diagnosis and treatment. It is precisely this fascination that we pass on to the next generation in our degree programme - and also to interested school pupils with this event on Radiology Day."

The new Bachelor's degree programme in Radiological Technology lasts six semesters and offers the most comprehensive practice-oriented training in Austria - with the highest proportion of internships in the country. Students acquire in-depth knowledge of imaging techniques, radiation protection, therapies and patient-orientated communication. There are no tuition fees for studying at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences; the degree entitles students to continue on to Master's programmes. Applications for the 2026/27 academic year are already open at www.hochschule-burgenland.at.
