Eisenstadt/Pinkafeld, 4 May 2026 - One year ago (exactly on 15 April), the news of the passing of the Rector of Burgenland University of Applied Sciences, Gernot Hanreich, came completely unexpectedly. It was a great loss for students, colleagues and the Austrian university scene, both professionally and above all personally. Burgenland University of Applied Sciences now wants to honour his memory with a permanently visible and institutionally anchored form of remembrance. To this end, it will be taking three specific measures.
1. science awards will be renamed
The prizes previously awarded by the university under the name "Pannonia Research Award" will in future be awarded as the "Gernot Hanreich Science Prizes". They recognise achievements in the areas of
- Research
- Innovative Teaching
- University Organisation
- Sustainability and
- Internationalisation and Mobility

2. in Eisenstadt and Pinkafeld, the respective lecture hall 1 becomes the "Gernot Hanreich Lecture Hall"
Furthermore, the two lecture halls 1 in Pinkafeld and Eisenstadt are renamed "Gernot Hanreich Lecture Hall" and provided with an additional plaque informing about the person and work of Gernot Hanreich as Rector of Burgenland University of Applied Sciences.
3. e.nova conference commemorates the former rector
The "e.nova" conference in the Department of Energy & Environment will also be permanently labelled "in memoriam Gernot Hanreich". It is an expression of the awareness that his work, his attitude and his commitment to Burgenland University of Applied Sciences will have a lasting effect.
Bettina Schauer-Frank, Rector of the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences

Gernot Hanreich has accompanied and shaped the development of Burgenland University of Applied Sciences with prudence, expertise and great personal commitment. The fact that his name is now permanently associated with central areas of our university is a matter of great concern to us all.
