From laser technologies to sensors in everyday appliances or high-performance motors in industry - we encounter electronics and photonics in all areas of life. The innovative Bachelor's degree programme in Applied Electronics and Photonics at University of Applied Sciences Burgenland is unique in Austria and trains experts for the Austrian electronics industry - currently the second largest industrial employer and the most research-intensive sector in Austria.

Who is the programme aimed at?

The Bachelor's degree programme in Applied Electronics and Photonics is suitable for people with an affinity for technology who are looking for a professional challenge in a growing market. Individual support is guaranteed during the programme. In addition, voluntary support courses are offered right from the start of the programme for people with no previous technical or scientific knowledge.

What are the main subjects of the degree programme?

In addition to a generalist basic education in the fields of applied electronics and photonics, physics, mathematics, computer science and quality management, the degree programme offers numerous specialisations, for example in module and circuit board development, sensor measurement technology, digital and communication technologies, laser measurement technology and optoelectronics.

The programme also offers an introduction to the latest industrial technologies: LiDAR, additive manufacturing, optoelectronics, laser technology, fibre optics, sensor electronics and microcontrollers.

Part-time degree programme for working professionals

The extra-occupational form of organisation with attendance at the Pinkafeld Study Centre on Friday afternoons and Saturdays is attractive for working people. The programme lasts six semesters and concludes with the academic degree Bachelor of Science in Engineering - BSc. It is also possible to study part-time for an extended period. The language of instruction is German. There are no tuition fees.

A high level of practical relevance is ensured by numerous excursions and practical projects that are integrated into the programme.

The use of an interactive Lab@Home provides flexibility for students who are already working: students receive an experiment kit for use at home at the start of their studies. This means that practically relevant courses can also be completed via distance learning.

Approximately 30 applicants are admitted to the Bachelor's degree programme in Applied Electronics and Photonics every year.

Applications received by the University of Applied Sciences Bachelor's Programme Applied Electronics and Photonics within a set deadline will be considered in the admission procedure for the coming academic year. Registration takes place via the online registration.

Personal admission interview

The admission interviews (individual appointments) take place from March onwards. The main content of the admission interview is motivation and career expectations. Further contents range from the subject area of previous education to the personal approach to the Bachelor's degree programme at the University of Applied Sciences to any existing professional experience of the applicants.

Decision on admission

The applicants are assessed, ranked and notified of their admission. Applicants without a firm acceptance will be placed on a waiting list and will be moved up in case of non-admission. Applications that are submitted late can only be considered if there are free places.

Deposit

After the binding allocation of a place, University of Applied Sciences Burgenland collects a deposit of € 350 from students to secure their place. This deposit is refunded to active students after the end of the first semester. If an applicant does not fulfil the admission requirements before the start of the programme (e.g. did not pass the resit of the school-leaving examination, did not pass the additional qualification examination, etc.), the deposit is also refunded. In all other cases, the deposit is forfeited.

Graduates of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Applied Electronics and Photonics find employment in a wide range of fields, from applied research and development through to production, as well as in sales, consultancy and training. They work in the following sectors: the semiconductor and automotive industries, lighting technology and photovoltaics, equipment development, sensor technology and measurement technology, laser measurement technology and materials processing, life sciences and diagnostics, and the entertainment industry.

Development engineers work at the cutting edge of technology. They design new electronic devices and systems that make our everyday lives smarter and more efficient – from high-performance sensors in cars to energy-efficient lighting. They use state-of-the-art simulation software and test their designs in laboratories to ensure that everything works smoothly.

Test engineers ensure that electronic devices function faultlessly before they are launched onto the market. They put sensors, displays, batteries and microprocessors through their paces – whether in the automotive industry, medical technology or consumer electronics. To do this, they use high-precision measuring instruments and analyse data to identify potential sources of error at an early stage. Their work is crucial to ensuring that products are reliable and durable.

Sales engineers act as the link between high-tech companies and their customers. They advise firms that require new technologies and explain which solutions best meet their needs – for example, in automation technology or laser measurement technology. To do this, they need not only technical knowledge but also strong communication skills. They deliver presentations, answer questions and help companies find the right technology for their products.
