Power in electronics

David Schweighofer is studying for a Bachelor's degree in Applied Electronics and Photonics at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland.

Fortunately, the degree programme is designed to be part-time, as the students are already attractive employees for companies during their studies.

David is currently working in the field of power electronics. His field involves supplying the really big motors in industry with electricity. He has been particularly interested in the field of electronics since his school days and therefore graduated from the HTL in Pinkafeld, which offers this specialisation. After graduating from high school and completing his civilian service, he started working and shortly afterwards began studying.

Thanks to his HTL training, he was able to get credit for some of the basics in the first two semesters at uni. "I was happy to accept the offer for some of the content, but for others I consciously took part in the courses at the UAS," says David. It is important to him to understand things from the ground up.

I think it's also important to complete a degree after school because you can only really immerse yourself in the complex subject matter with time, as it's easier to gain an understanding at a more mature age.

He now works in electronics development at Puls Vario in Vienna. "My fellow students and I are in high demand. The job offer was really good. That's why I commute to Vienna for work. It is possible for me to study in addition to 30 hours of work."

For non-technicians, he explains his field as follows: "If you want to charge your computer, you plug a switching power supply into the socket, which generates direct current from alternating current, which is used to charge the device. In my field, it's about large industrial motors that have to be driven with a lot of power."

Now, in the third semester, his classes are all about this circuit technology. "We go into a lot of depth, which also benefits me professionally."
