Why my coffee often gets cold

Last summer semester, a group of students on the Master's degree programme in Human Resource Management and Labour Law MOEL at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences worked intensively with course instructor Heinz Herczeg on the question of how storytelling can be used as an instrument in the search for employees. The campaign they developed is already considered a best-practice example in the industry.

The call for AGILITY is also unmistakable in human resources. In times of skills shortages and digitalisation as well as the associated job challenges, personnel selection is increasingly characterised by extensive requirement profiles and the "war for talent". Filling vacancies and newly created positions in a long-term and successful manner is becoming more and more of a challenge. But how can we as human resources managers fulfil these increasing requirements?

The question that sometimes arises is not only how we find people who complement our company perfectly, but also how we make our recruiting process more agile in order to give potential applicants the opportunity to recognise for themselves whether they can master the specific job challenges and want to face the day-to-day work. Not just to make applicants aware, but to give them the opportunity to try themselves out.

A key success factor in jobselling is telling stories, but leaving the "HOW" open. However, it was precisely this question that our team was most concerned with in the task of "developing a job adventure".

  • HOW can we make the recruitment process for "transport managers" more agile?
  • HOW do we present the job in a story?
  • HOW do we assess the success potential of applicants?
  • HOW do we offer the opportunity to try out the job challenge?
  • HOW do we make the leap out of the box to enable agile personnel selection?
  • ...and last but not least: HOW can "Little Red Riding Hood" help us to understand all this?

Heinz Herzceg accompanied us on the sometimes rocky road with a lot of commitment and support and helped us to recognise how jobselling can break up our everyday recruiting routine and how storytelling can form the basis for AGILES Recruiting - he made us look at the process from a different perspective and broadened our horizons in order to be able to take on the challenge of JOBSELLING.

Today, we can look back together on successful teamwork that enables applicants to experience the "Transport Manager" job adventure.

In our story "Why my coffee often gets cold", situations from everyday working life that are critical to success are told in an emotional way in order to make the different roles of the transport manager understandable for applicants. The designed flyer offers the opportunity to recognise whether you are the "just get on with it" or "I always find a solution" type and also serves as an invitation to the "Transport Management Simulator".

There, potential candidates can experience the day-to-day work of a transport manager at first hand and try their hand at solving various job challenges to find out for themselves whether they are the "Vicky of transport management". The campaign is rounded off with a short video in which a candidate recounts their personal job adventure after their visit to the simulator.

For our team, it was a turbulent and very challenging journey from classic advertisement to creative jobselling campaign. We are five students on the Master's degree course in Human Resource Management and Labour Law at CEEC, a colourful team with a wide range of industry and professional experience, united by an interest in HR and who embarked on the jobselling adventure together.
