Full steam ahead to success
Marlene Sabathy, a graduate of the Master's programme in International Business Relations with a specialisation in Financial Management at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland, has both.
She realised that she enjoyed the financial sector while she was still at school and so her first job at Steiermärkische Sparkasse immediately followed her A-levels. Parallel to her full-time job, she completed a part-time bachelor's degree in banking and insurance at the FH Joanneum. This was followed by a career change to Andritz AG and the desire to broaden her horizons with a Master's degree programme.
She was specifically looking for a way to combine a degree programme with full-time employment and found the ideal solution in the hybrid study model at University of Applied Sciences Burgenland. The attendance phases, which only took place every second weekend, as well as the educational institution's extensive experience in teaching working students convinced her.
The Master's programme in International Business Relations in Financial Management not only offered Marlene Sabathy practice-oriented courses, but also the opportunity to take part in projects such as the I2B Challenge, in which she developed her own business model.

"I particularly appreciated the clear structure of the degree programme. It enabled me to plan well. With the broad expertise I gained during my studies, I feel ideally positioned for my professional future. What I particularly like about finance is its versatility and dynamism. There is no standstill in this area and I can apply my knowledge in different sectors."

Completing the Master's degree programme gave her the opportunity to continue her career in a new, challenging environment and to further develop her knowledge in a targeted manner.
Alongside her professional career, sport is a central part of her life. She was active in powerlifting for over 14 years, including many years in the national team, and took part in more than 70 championships, including 19 international competitions.
Marlene Sabathy is a multiple Austrian national champion and has achieved top rankings at several European and world championships. A year ago, she retired from active powerlifting and switched to weightlifting, as this sport is more compatible with her everyday life. She also works as a powerlifting judge and has been responsible for the finances of her club since 2018, which is one of the few clubs with a female board of directors.
