A Fresh Start with Purpose
This mindset has accompanied him since his youth. At the beginning of his American football career, he mostly sat on the bench. And yet, giving up was never an option for him. “One of my coaches later said he would actually have advised me to take up a different sport back then. But my ambition ultimately led me to become team captain.”
This mentality also shapes his professional path. “Why do we fall? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up,” he quotes the well-known Batman line during the conversation. After all, new beginnings require a great deal of courage. This is something the former professional firefighter has now become well practised in. It was during rescue operations that he first came into contact with the healthcare sector. After his time in emergency services, the Burgenland resident by choice moved into the private sector and gained experience in several corporations. The academic foundation for this was provided by his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in business. Nevertheless, over the years he realised that he had not yet truly found his place professionally: “I was missing a sense of purpose.”
The Courage to Take New Paths
Today, Martin is taking a deliberate fresh start in our new Bachelor’s degree programme in Radiological Technology. Several universities were an option for him, but in the end his gut feeling led him to choose the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland: “The conversation with programme director David Rupprecht was on equal footing. You can immediately tell when someone is passionate about what they do.” At first, Martin had doubts about the distance between his home in Parndorf and the study location in Pinkafeld, but he now knows it was the right decision for him. “Although I don’t really believe in right or wrong decisions. What matters is simply that you choose a path at all and avoid standing still.”
What he particularly appreciates about the programme is the combination of theory and practice, as well as the space for lecturers to share their own experiences. He values the versatility of the profession just as much as the opportunity to truly make a difference in everyday life.

For me, radiological technology builds a bridge between technology, healthcare, and patients. For many, it is a black box, often associated with fear. That is exactly where I want to start, by providing reassurance.
Martin Joszt, Bachelor of Radiological Technology student
What motivates him on difficult days? “Looking ahead. Everyone has days when it is hard to even get out of bed. But if you have a clear goal in mind, you overcome those phases as well. In the end, we always have more possibilities in our hands than we believe.”
