Hannah Kubalek is studying for a Bachelor's degree in Healthcare and Nursing at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences.

In her spare time, she and her dog Wilma enthusiastically take part in rescue dog training.

Hannah has always been interested in the health sector. She has suffered from a chronic illness since early childhood and spent a lot of time in hospital. "The nurses were my go-to people. As my mum also works in this profession, it was obvious for me to follow this path and I am very happy with it."

Hannah is now in her fifth semester and has got a taste of many areas of work during her practice-orientated training. "I liked the emergency room in Oberwart and oncology the best. Professionally, I would like to work in the central emergency department." What excites her about the profession?

I think you definitely go home with a good feeling. You get a lot of gratitude back. That's really nice.

What's the story behind her dog Wilma? Hannah has grown up with dogs all her life. In January 2023, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. That's when she realised: "I need something I can get involved in." She decided on Wilma the giant schnauzer and explains: "These dogs need a lot of action because they are working dogs." They both started training as a rescue dog team and are absolutely in love with this work. They train at least twice a week at the squadron in Güssing, but also at various other locations such as abandoned houses. Wilma is 1 ½ years old. The pair passed their companion dog test with distinction in September 2024.

The job of rescue dogs is to search for missing people, for example in rubble.

In terms of her health, the positive young woman goes through rather bad phases. For example, after one of her numerous operations or radioiodine therapy. She shares her life very consciously on her Instagram account in order to raise awareness and reduce inhibitions towards people who are ill.
