Environmental Expertise
Fortunately, Dennis Röger has only rarely had to deal with such operations. A student at UAS Burgenland, he is a trained chemical engineer and works in quality management for defence equipment at the Austrian Armed Forces. He completed his part-time Bachelor’s degree in Energy and Environmental Management at UAS Burgenland and is now pursuing a Master’s in the same field.
Chemistry and the natural sciences have fascinated him since his school days. For the past 15 years, he has worked with explosives at the Armed Forces, both in Austria and abroad. Initially in quality control, he now works in quality management and occasionally takes part in the aforementioned special operations, where his task is to safely detonate unexploded ordnance. What he appreciates most about his job are the variety, opportunities for development, interdisciplinary collaboration, camaraderie, and teamwork.
His enthusiasm for environmental technology has also been a key part of his studies at UAS Burgenland. For instance, in his Bachelor’s thesis, he explored the impact of the war in Ukraine—specifically the pollution caused by munitions—on agriculture. Completing this project remains one of his fondest memories from his time as a student.
More generally, his studies in Pinkafeld left a lasting impression on him.

The most exciting subjects for me were Environmental Biology, Environmental Ecology, Life Cycle Management, and Recycling Technology.
Dennis Röger, UAS Burgenland alumni
He is especially grateful for the unique opportunity to balance work, studies, and personal life that the part-time structure provided, which he found both family- and career-friendly.
Röger also has experience in teaching, not just learning. In addition to giving specialised lectures on chemical technology and explosive and detonator science to soldiers, he also serves as an examiner for apprenticeship qualification exams in his spare time. He finds passing on his knowledge to young people extremely rewarding.
