In autumn, Saphira Lee Steinhauer from Pinkafeld began her bachelor's degree in midwifery at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences.

She has known that she wanted to be a midwife since she was five years old. "I've always loved playing with dolls. I've been fascinated by newborn babies and their relationship with their mothers ever since. That's what led me to become a midwife. My dream has now come true with my studies," she says.

In 2021, Saphira Lee graduated from Wimmergymnasium Oberschützen and then decided to do a voluntary social year with the Red Cross. She has admired the work of the Red Cross since she was a teenager. "I've always wanted to be involved and I have a great desire to help."

After her voluntary year of social work, the motivated student stayed involved with the Red Cross and does service work when she has the time.

Saphira Lee currently only has female fellow students at university. "It's the other way round at the Red Cross. There are mainly male colleagues. So it balances out," she says.

The admission process for the midwifery degree programme consisted of a written test and a personal interview with the programme director. "The test wasn't that easy. It tested logical thinking, spatial thinking, general knowledge and some health-related knowledge," reports the student. Since June, she has known that she will spend the next three years studying at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences.

I'm particularly looking forward to all the midwifery-related content and the first internship is already planned for January, and of course I'm looking forward to that too.
