You're always smarter with hindsight. That's why I asked Leona Hausensteiner, in her sixth semester on the Information, Media and Communication degree programme, the question: Would you choose this educational path again?

My name is Leona Hausensteiner, I am 22 years old and live in Tschurndorf in the district of Oberpullendorf. I completed the Information, Media and Communication degree programme at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences in June. My specialisation on the course was "Media Studies and Journalism".

What I appreciate most about the degree programme is that we have a very strong practical focus. You can't compare our degree programme with any other, as we focus on digital content production and not just theory.

Why this degree programme?

I chose this degree programme because I am a very creative person. My older brother studied IT Infrastructure Management at the FH Burgenland and told me that the Information, Media and Communication degree programme would suit me perfectly. When the tutors from FH Burgenland came to my school at the time, they finally convinced me to do my Bachelor's degree programme. I chose my specialisation ‘Media Studies and Journalism’ because I like writing and although I don't see myself directly in journalism, this specialisation appealed to me the most.

Journey

I travelled to the university in my own car, as the situation with public transport in Burgenland is unfortunately very difficult. I did try travelling to the UAS by public transport at the beginning, but it was too tiring for me in the long run.

Studying as a group

I have a good relationship with my fellow students. We are all very communicative and quickly got on well. My fellow students at the UAS have become friends and I'm sure that I'll still be friends with them after graduation.

The lecturers at the FH

The relationship between lecturers and students at the UAS is generally very pleasant and the lecturers treat us as equals. Of course, there are always exceptions, but they prove the rule!

Study location

Unfortunately, there isn't that much going on in Eisenstadt, which is a shame as a student, as I would like to do things here more often. A big advantage for me personally is that I only have a 25-minute journey by car from my home.

Internship

During my internship, I worked at the Mörbisch Lake Festival from June to October. I was given a lot of responsibility, but I personally liked it because it challenged and encouraged me. I had very nice colleagues who explained everything to me. The internship showed me that I definitely want to work in the cultural sector later on.

I liked that a lot ...

What I appreciate most about the degree programme is that we have a very strong practical focus. You can't compare our degree programme with any other, as we focus on digital content production and not just theory. I also really liked the fact that you can get a taste of many topics.

... that rather less

I would have liked more internships, especially in the last three semesters, because there weren't as many lectures. I believe that more internships would have prepared me even better for my future career.

Conclusion

I would definitely recommend my Information, Media and Communication degree programme to my best friend. After graduating, many doors will be open to me in my professional life, as we have covered a broad spectrum in the programme.
