You're always smarter with hindsight. That's why I asked Paul Weber the question after his last semester on the Energy and Environmental Management degree programme: Would you choose this educational path again?

STUDENT LENA TAUCHNER IN AN INTERVIEW WITH STUDENT PAUL WEBER

My name is Paul Weber, I'm 21 years old and a graduate of the Bachelor's programme in Energy and Environmental Management. I was looking back on my Bachelor's time at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences because I'm starting my Master's in Energy and Environmental Management in autumn.

My expectations of the degree programme were exceeded by far. I would never have imagined that my knowledge would be so deepened. And my internship has also confirmed that I made the right decision here.

Why this degree programme?

At secondary school, I chose a science specialisation and through the UAS guide I found the Bachelor's degree programme in Energy and Environmental Management. I realised that I wanted to make a difference in the field of sustainability and study at a UAS. The degree programme offers the perfect combination of science, technology and business, and so the decision was made.

Journey

I live in Lebenbrunn near Lockenhaus. The Pinkafeld campus is almost on my doorstep. I drive about 20 minutes to the campus by car, public transport is not worthwhile for me due to the lack of flexibility.

Studying as a group

We are a small group of sixteen people and got on very well right from the start. Despite corona, we managed to get to know each other better through the group work, and as the FH Burgenland brings special people together, many friendships have been formed here.

The lecturers at the FH

You certainly can't complain about the lecturers at FH Burgenland! From the head of the degree programme to the lecturers, you are always treated as equals.

Study location

Compared to Eisenstadt, Pinkafeld is a lot smaller. There aren't as many things to do here, but there are plenty of pubs where you can review the courses over a glass of wine. The pubs have also adapted their prices to the school town of Pinkafeld. Not far from Pinkafeld is Oberwart, where you can also do things like go to the cinema.

Internship

The work placement is in my sixth semester. I worked in product development and was allowed to work on my own series of tests. Of course, we've already done things like this in the lab at the UAS, but putting it into practice is something really special. You get the feeling: ‘This is about something’.

I liked that a lot ...

I really enjoyed the laboratory exercises on the degree programme. The first two semesters were a lot of basics, but in the third semester the lab started and the practical application made the theory tangible.

My expectations of the degree programme were exceeded by far. I would never have imagined that my knowledge would be so in-depth. And my work placement also confirmed that I had made the right decision.

... that rather less

The fact that there were one or two lectures that I didn't like so much is just part of it. The only thing that really bothers me is the public transport connections. I'm studying a ‘sustainable’ degree programme, but do I drive there every day? That's the cat biting its own tail.

Conclusion

I would recommend this degree programme not only to my best friend, but to anyone who is interested in the subject.
