Linda becomes a midwife

Linda Knopf has known that she wants to become a midwife since a spectacular assignment during her voluntary social year with the Red Cross.

She and her colleagues were called to a heavily pregnant woman. The baby was almost born in the ambulance. While her colleagues were relieved to have made it to the hospital in time, Linda was sad. She would have liked to have attended and experienced the birth.

By the time she realised that she wanted to study for a bachelor's degree in midwifery, the application deadline had already passed. Linda therefore bridged another year with service at the Red Cross in Oberwart. In addition to the paramedic service, she was also involved in administration and held first aid courses during this year.

When I applied for the degree programme at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences, everything went well - fortunately, as there are up to 160 applicants for only 15 study places. The admissions process consisted of a written application, followed by a written test and an oral interview.

I prepared well for the test. I was asked about general knowledge as well as medical topics.

For Linda, it had been clear for a long time that she wanted to work in a social profession. Her mum is a health and nursing professional and is naturally very happy that Linda is finding fulfilment in a similar field.

So far, her studies have been very exciting for the young student. The amount of material in anatomy has of course been challenging, "but I haven't found it difficult to learn because it interests me," says Linda. "It's a completely different way of learning than at school." She also thinks the practical learning in the skills lab is great. In January, she will start her first real internship. She is already looking forward to it. In general, Linda feels that "everyone on the degree programme really makes an effort to turn us into good midwives."

For Linda, the voluntary social year at the Red Cross was eye-opening. "I can only recommend it to anyone and everyone. You learn a lot for life. I've grown up a lot during this year. You learn to take on responsibility and grow with your tasks."
