What makes travelling so special for me is the diversity of countries, languages, cultures, landscapes and customs that you can explore. Every country has its own specialities. So why not try out new things, explore new countries, swim against the tide - to the East? And when, if not during your studies? Even if the budget is sometimes tight, this is usually the time when you are most flexible and (hopefully ;-)) most receptive. There are also favourable options: The subsidised summer colleges take you "off to the East" for two to three weeks to Hungary, Russia, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Poland or Slovakia. Countries that are probably not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a summer holiday - unfortunately. Yet there is so much to discover, experience and learn there.
We asked a few former participants why they should take part in a summer school and what they remember most. These were their answers:
Leaving the comfort zone
"I was a bit nervous before I left, simply because I was afraid of having to communicate in Croatian. It took me a bit of effort, but in the end I learnt a lot during my three weeks there and it really took away my fear of speaking."
Anita, Summer College Pula/Croatia
Strolling instead of consuming
"The best moments for me were simply sitting together with the other students with a drink by the Danube, without having the feeling of constantly having to consume or experience something. That was a real feeling of freedom. It was a holiday for me."
Sarah, Summer College Budapest/Hungary
Never a dull day
"We always had lessons in the morning, then we had lunch together and in the afternoon the local students showed us around. Excursions were always planned for the weekend. We really saw a lot, including places that aren't the classic tourist hotspots."
Alexander, summer school Poděbrady/Czech Republic
Feeling welcome
"The people were so welcoming and open. I experienced a real culture shock when I was back in Austria. I would never have imagined that."
Matthias, summer college Prešov/Slovakia
Making friends
"'What do you want to do in Poland?', many of my friends asked me when I told them about my summer plans for 2019. If it hadn't been for corona, I would have visited my new friends there with them this year."
Theresa, Summer College Krakow/Poland
Creating memories
"The summer college was definitely the highlight of my time at university. I have very fond memories of it."
Maja, summer school Moscow/Russia
Experience a lot for little money
"Why should you take part in a summer college? Where else can you go on holiday for three weeks for €200?"
Thomas, Summer College Krakow/Poland
Let yourself be surprised
"I'm not really a city person. But I felt so safe and comfortable in Budapest. I just got on the bus on my own and travelled around the city. The city is so clean and well-kept."
Manuela, Summer College Budapest/Hungary
Anticipation is the greatest joy. The next summer college is sure to come.
