Injury prevention for footballers
Football training with students from the bachelor's degree programme in physiotherapy
- Students advise footballers from SC Pinkafeld on injury prevention
- Prevention as an important professional field for prospective physiotherapists
"Intellectuals solve problems, geniuses prevent them!" The students on the Bachelor's degree programme in Physiotherapy at FH Burgenland took this quote from Albert Einstein as an opportunity to organise a project day with footballers from SC Pinkafeld. The aim was to give the players expert tips on injury prevention. The practical session with the athletes was an exciting change of pace for the students. "Prevention plays an important role in the bachelor's degree programme in physiotherapy," explains programme director Heike Bauer-Horvath. The students were delighted to have the opportunity to pass on the expert knowledge they had already acquired during their studies.
Popular team sport with a high risk of injury
Football is one of the most popular team sports in the world. Fitness, strength, stamina, coordination and teamwork are equally in demand. However, it is not only the demands on the athletes that are high, but also the risk of injury on the pitch. The students' project aims to counteract this. "We first gave the players and coaches of the Burgendlandliga club a presentation on the most important information regarding ankle, adductor, hamstring and knee injuries, as well as suitable preventative measures," explains student Mario Radich. The theoretical knowledge was then put into practice in a practical session under the guidance of the students. In addition to suitable measurement methods to determine the current level of performance, the programme also consisted of football-specific exercises which, according to the latest scientific findings, should significantly reduce the susceptibility to injury in football.
"We received valuable tips from the students, both in terms of injury prevention and a lot of information about returning to training after injuries," says captain Dominik Luif. "The exercises shown will be incorporated into team training by our coaches and everyone will use them individually." "The implementation of the student project was a complete success, as everyone involved was able to gain a lot of new insights from which they will certainly benefit in the future," said the programme director happily.
