We set ourselves no limits
Markus Potenes has nothing but good things to say about his time at the HTL Pinkafeld. Especially as he discovered his passion for building technology there. After his A-levels, he wanted to immerse himself in the world of work and went to Vienna to do so. His first boss, Peter Baldauf, gave the young man plenty of freedom to get to know the industry as well as possible on the construction site.

My boss sent me to the construction site to assemble my first drawn plans with the words: "And now you can see how this can be realised in reality. That was very instructive and formative.
Markus Potenes, student at the FH Burgenland
A former schoolmate was studying at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences and, believing that there was nothing to lose but everything to gain, Markus Potenes enrolled on the Bachelor's degree programme in Energy and Environmental Management at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences. "It was exactly the right thing to do for several reasons. Firstly, I studied together with my two best friends - so the weekends at the FH Campus in Pinkafeld almost felt like a shared hobby. The part-time organisation also means that you can take a lot with you for your everyday working life. If technical questions arise at work, you can simply ask questions in the lecture. That's a huge advantage."
Immediately after completing his bachelor's degree, he set up his own business, Viecon Planungs GmbH, together with a good friend, Gregor Szerencsi. "Once the company was up and running, I started a Master's degree in Building Technology and Facility Management at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences - that was always my plan." The company took off in the meantime. At the beginning of 2022, the two founders were able to take on their first full-time employee, and the team has since continued to grow, as has the customer base. "As far as our projects are concerned, we don't set ourselves any limits," says Potenes. "We focus on technically demanding projects and have both public and private clients."
He explains why he is still enthusiastic about his studies as follows:
A degree programme enables new approaches to problems. And apart from the great professional input, you also acquire a structured way of working, which is very useful in your career.

The Master's programme gave him a deep basic understanding of building technology. "This training gives you the confidence to break new ground and try things out." The contacts he made during his studies are also invaluable, both privately and professionally. "Client representatives, construction partners, etc... You get to know such great people. The network is incredible."
