Eisenstadt, 8th of November 2024 - A total of 20 research papers were submitted for this year's Burgenland University Prize. These included three bachelor's theses, twelve master's theses and five dissertations from a wide range of subject areas. A jury of experts made the decision. Prize money of € 500 was awarded for the bachelor's thesis, a prize worth € 1,000 for the master's thesis and € 1,500 for the dissertation.

Study on transit workers

Barbara Sokolicek, BA completed her Bachelor's degree in Social Work at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland and wrote her final paper on the topic of "Working and support conditions in socio-economic businesses from the perspective of transit workers". She conducted interviews with companies in Lower Austria and Burgenland. The study focussed on the working conditions and support experiences of people working in socio-economic enterprises.

The analysis of the interviews shows that the working conditions in such companies are perceived as individual, flexible and meaningful. The activities are varied and offer scope for personal development and identification. The combination of daily structure and supervision forms a protective zone for experience.

Barbara Sokolicek, prizewinner in the bachelor thesis category

The jury's opinion: "This Bachelor's thesis is of an excellent standard throughout and makes a significant contribution to basic research in the field of social work."

Support for teaching staff

Hannah Meller, MSc MEd BSc BEd completed her teaching degree in Psychology and Philosophy and Inclusive Education at the University of Vienna. In her master's thesis, she dealt with the phenomenon of challenging student behaviour from the perspective of teachers.

Teachers need training and further education opportunities as well as supervision in order to be able to adopt different perspectives on challenging behaviour and to recognise the subjective meaning of student behaviour.

Hannah Meller, prizewinner in the Master's thesis category

In line with previous research findings, the challenging behaviour of pupils could largely be attributed to family factors.

The jury's opinion: "The findings can contribute to developing a better understanding of challenging student behaviour, dealing more sensitively with terminology, reflecting on one's own perception, improving coping strategies and applying inclusion pedagogical action strategies to support students and teachers and make schools more inclusive."

A check of the LMS

Dipl.-Ing. Adolf Selinger, MA PhD completed a PhD programme in Educational & Communication Sciences, which was offered by UAS Burgenland in cooperation with international partner universities. He dedicated his dissertation to the learning management system LMS and its acceptance by Austrian secondary school teachers. One of his exciting findings:

Teachers at vocational secondary schools use LMS more intensively than teachers at other types of school.

Adolf Selinger, prizewinner in the dissertation category

In principle, objective usability is the strongest predictor of user-friendliness as perceived by teachers.

The jury's opinion: "The work provides decisive findings on the acceptance of learning management systems (LMS) among Austrian secondary school teachers. The methodological approach is flawless and comprehensible throughout, as the application of advanced statistical methods enables a precise and transparent examination of the hypotheses, which makes the work particularly worthy of an award."

Jury of experts made the decision

A jury from various departments scrutinised the submitted work and ultimately decided on the winners. The prize money is shared equally by all four universities.
