Team meeting: Three female employees

The University of Applied Sciences Burgenland is responding to the increasing demand for specialists who can strategically combine health, sustainability and personnel development by renaming the programme and reorienting its content. Enrolment for the next academic year is already open.

Pinkafeld, 4 November 2025. The University of Applied Sciences Burgenland has succeeded in making a forward-looking development in the Department of Health. The previous Master's degree programme in Health Promotion and Human Resource Management is now called Health Promotion and Eco-Social Human Resource Management. This step not only addresses a new target group, but also places a forward-looking focus on sustainability and social responsibility.

Unique in Austria: focus on health and sustainability

The new degree programme is the first in Austria to combine health promotion, sustainability and HR management in this way. "We are closing a gap in the education sector," explains programme director Florian Schnabel.

"Our graduates are ideally prepared to master the pressing challenges of the modern working world - from workplace health promotion to sustainable personnel development and the design of sustainable working environments."

The course is aimed at healthcare professionals who want to deal with sustainability issues, as well as people from other sectors who recognise the connection between health and sustainability and want to use it as a competitive advantage.

Possibility of a double degree

In addition to the Master of Science in Health Studies degree, students can also obtain a CAS - Certificate of Advanced Studies. Two additional courses and an accompanying written thesis must be completed for this. The CAS "Sustainability and Public Health" (16 ECTS) is an additional academic qualification that opens up modern career opportunities in the field of sustainability strategies and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), climate-resilient organisational development and green leadership.

The part-time Master's programme offers an ideal opportunity to sharpen your own profile and qualify for management roles in companies or organisations. "We have closely aligned the curriculum with the needs of the economy," emphasises Schnabel. "The demand for experts who can strategically combine health promotion and sustainability is enormous."

Graduates of the course are ideally qualified for jobs in the management of health promotion and sustainability projects, in occupational health management, in organisational development or in sustainability reporting. Specialists with training in health science and methodology are particularly in demand, for example to carry out dual materiality analyses or to integrate sustainability agendas in companies.

Reaching Men as a New Target Group

It is no secret that the healthcare sector is heavily dominated by women. Here, too, the new degree programme aims to open up new perspectives: "This degree programme is an invitation to anyone who wants to deal with the topics of health and sustainability in a scientifically sound manner - regardless of their previous profession," says Schnabel. "We offer a platform for people who want to play an active role in shaping healthy, sustainable and future-proof working environments." There is also a conscious desire to encourage men to study.
