Heat action day at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences
Pinkafeld, 10 June 2025: Under the motto "Focus on heat - focus on health", Burgenland University of Applied Sciences took an active part in the national Heat Action Day. The aim of the Austria-wide initiative is to draw attention to the health risks of heat and promote dialogue about protective measures and how to deal with rising temperatures. After all, heat is the greatest health risk in Austria due to climate change.
With this event, Burgenland University of Applied Sciences once again demonstrated its efforts to actively contribute to positive social change. Organised by the Office of Corporate Health Management, the programme included a series of stations where employees and students were able to obtain comprehensive information and expand their knowledge in a fun way.

Heat affects us all - it is a health hazard that we need to be prepared for. It is therefore important to make knowledge easy to access and show how we can protect ourselves - both at work and in our personal environment.
Nina Wallner, research assistant in the Department of Health & Social Affairs
What to do when it's hot in the office? How can you help someone suffering from a sunstroke?
The event provided information about heat and health (promotion) in the workplace and tips for cooling options and heat protection. The Burgenland Red Cross provided first aid measures in the event of heat, including sunstroke or heat exhaustion, as well as practical tips for emergencies. Students from the Bachelor's degree programme in Health Management and Health Promotion designed stations on the topics of nutrition, MealPrep in the heat and healthy drinking. They also presented their posters on topics such as: Heat & Learning, Sleep or Exercise.

I think we're in for many very hot days again this summer. In my opinion, making everyday life a little easier by adapting your diet is a really good tip when it's hot.
Laura Pernter, student
The Red Cross Burgenland and the Unteres Lafnitztal water board were co-operation partners on the heat action day.
Commitment to a sustainable future

The effects of the climate crisis are also becoming increasingly apparent in the healthcare sector. In the Department of Health and Social Affairs, we integrate sustainability topics into all degree programmes and prepare our students specifically to both respond to challenges such as heat and actively contribute to climate health - in their thinking and in their daily actions.
Barbara Szabo, Lecturer in the Department of Health & Social Affairs
Burgenland University of Applied Sciences recognises its responsibility to actively contribute to overcoming the climate crisis. Sustainability and climate competence are addressed across all degree programmes. The health degree programmes, for example, offer an online self-study course on "Ecological Sustainability and Health" as well as interdisciplinary courses and practical projects. The aim is to prepare students for the health consequences of climate change and to enable them to implement sustainable solutions in their professional field.
