Prevention of radicalisation and extremism: Ministry of the Interior cooperates with Burgenland University of Applied Sciences
Eisenstadt/Vienna, 2 June 2026: The Burgenland University of Applied Sciences and the Directorate of State Security and Intelligence (DSN) have signed a cooperation agreement in the field of radicalisation and extremism prevention. The aim of the cooperation is to make a sustainable contribution to the prevention of radicalisation, extremism and terrorism through scientifically sound and practical projects.
Student project with lasting consequences
The impetus for the cooperation came from a successful practical project by students on the Master's degree programme in E-Learning and Knowledge Management. Students on this programme work in small groups on practical projects for real clients in their second and third semesters. In this specific case, they developed an interactive, barrier-free e-learning course on the prevention of radicalisation and extremism for civil servants for the DSN and the Security Academy of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. This is intended to convey a standardised basic understanding and at the same time strengthen confidence in everyday professional life. The modular course can be completed at any time and from any location and can be extended to other target groups and departments if required.
Accordingly, the new cooperation agreement focuses in particular on the development of digital prevention formats such as e-learning programmes, interactive learning modules and training materials. The projects are to be developed as part of courses, project work and master's theses and will be supported by experts from the DSN.
Innovative solutions for practical application
The collaboration combines the safety expertise of the DSN with the didactic and technological expertise of the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences. This should result in innovative solutions that are not only applicable in the university context, but also beyond.
Radicalisation and extremism are also increasingly developing in digital spaces. This makes it all the more important to continuously develop prevention work and combine it with scientific expertise. Our cooperation with Burgenland University of Applied Sciences helps us to address current issues in a practical way and develop innovative prevention approaches that can have a direct impact when working with different target groups.
DSN Director Sylvia Mayer
The cooperation is also seen at the university as an important step towards making real social challenges accessible to students.

Our students not only develop learning content for theory, but also work on tasks with direct practical relevance. They cooperate with state institutions, introduce scientific methods and design digital prevention programmes that respond to real needs. It is precisely this combination of teaching, research and social responsibility that makes this collaboration so special.
Barbara Geyer, Head of the E-Learning and Knowledge Management programme
The cooperation is designed for the long term and is intended to facilitate new projects on a regular basis. This creates a structured framework for the continuous transfer of knowledge between the university, security authorities and society.
