Second Fulbright Professor from the USA at UAS Burgenland

David Timmons is a professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston, both with the Economics Department and with the School of Environment. Within the Fulbright Programme, the environmental economist is contributing his expertise to courses and research projects at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland in Pinkafeld and Eisenstadt.

Eisenstadt, December 10, 2024 – For the second time, UAS Burgenland has proven to be a popular institution for international lecturers visiting through the Fulbright Programme. The Fulbright Programme, one of the world’s most prestigious scholarship programmes, supports academic exchange with the USA. Environmental economist David Timmons from Massachusetts is teaching and conducting research this winter semester in Pinkafeld and Eisenstadt.

Josef Ressel Centre in Pinkafeld as his Workplace

His research focuses on long-term modelling of sustainable energy systems for cost and climate optimisation. This aligns perfectly with the work of the Josef Ressel Centre (“LiSA”*) at UAS Burgenland in Pinkafeld, which is dedicated to the sustainability assessment of energy systems. In addition to his research, Professor Timmons also contributes to teaching environmental and renewable-energy economics at the university, both in the Department of Energy & Environment in Pinkafeld and in the English-language Bachelor programme of International Sustainable Business in Eisenstadt.

Professor Timmons highlights the leadership role of Austria in renewable systems: “Most of my research is about the economics of renewable energy systems, or the economics of energy systems that do not include fossil fuels, and I am very excited to conduct this research here at UAS Burgenland. I am learning so much from my colleagues at the Josef Ressel Centre (and others at UAS Burgenland) who have been working on a variety of renewable energy topics for many years", says Timmons.

Austria is an excellent location for this research, with well developed renewable resources including wind, solar, and hydropower energy. For biomass energy in particular, Austria is recognized as a world leader. I am so grateful for the opportunity to work on these important issues at this very special place.

Pleasure and honour for Burgenland University of Applied Sciences

"It is a great pleasure and honour for the university to welcome David S. Timmons as the second Fulbright visiting professor in the Department of Energy & Environment,” says Michael Roither, Vice Rector for International Relations at UAS Burgenland.

Professor Timmons is an internationally recognised expert in environmental economics and brings his expertise directly into the research and teaching at UAS Burgenland. In addition to the many positive effects of international collaboration for the university, this also creates a win-win situation for both sides. I would therefore like to once again thank the Austrian-American Educational Commission and Fulbright Austria, who have made this exchange possible in cooperation with our university.
