From lecture hall to radio studio

Her own alarm clock goes off every day at 4 am, and has done so for two and a half years. But even before she joined “TimpelTime”(the morning show on 88.6), one thing was clear: “Working in radio is my passion.” This was made possible by her work placement as part of her Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Information, Media & Communication at the University of Applied Sciences (then still known as the FH) Burgenland in Eisenstadt. That was in 2015.

“It’s actually true that the work placement at 88.6 opened up a whole new world for me,” says Sarah. Until then, she hadn’t really been sure which direction her career path should take. Even as a pupil at HLW Biedermannsdorf, she had an affinity for media and languages, but studying interpreting (Italian, German, English) didn’t really set her heart racing.

She realised that the more commitment she showed, the more she could achieve and make a difference.

The final spark was ignited for Sarah when one of her videos ended up on the broadcaster’s social media channels. She’d been supposed to film her colleague trying out the wildest rides at the Vienna Prater. In the end, the video mainly showed Sarah screaming.

“You need to be open-minded and show initiative,” she is convinced. The skills she gained from her degree that were indispensable to her were: project and content management, journalistic research and presenting. “The degree programme gives you insights into many different fields of knowledge, which have equipped me with new skills. I also made lifelong friends at university. I always look back on that time fondly. It was a wonderful time.” Cover image (c)Pascal Riesinger
