Student projects

In the Master's programme E-Learning and Knowledge Management, students are not only taught the theoretical basics, but also implement what they have learned in the 3rd semester on their own responsibility in "real" projects with external training partners. The assignments for these projects come from private companies, public institutions, NGOs or from research projects of the degree programme. Each project team is supported by a supervisor. The project work is agreed, planned and carried out by student teams with the clients. Students also manage the projects, developing their management skills in the process.

Raising awareness of sexuality in Kenya

The number of unwanted teenage pregnancies in Kenya has risen rapidly during the Covid-19 pandemic. The students' practical project aims to counteract this.

The reasons for the increase in pregnancies in Kenya range from a lack of knowledge about contraception to "sex-for-fish" bartering to fulfil vital needs. The lack of awareness among young people not only entails health risks; unwanted teenage pregnancies often lead to school dropouts and those affected suffer from the economic consequences for the rest of their lives. To counteract this negative trend, high-quality, digital and freely accessible educational materials for young people were developed as part of the "Sex Education in Kenya" practical project

Knowledge is power

The Kenyan NGO YEN (Youth Information Network) in Kakamega County has been carrying out valuable educational work in the region for years. The vision of a virtual optimisation of services emerged in an exchange between NGO employees, Dr Birgit Phillips and the community health workers carrying out the work. The project idea was ultimately realised by four students on the Master's degree in E-Learning and Knowledge Management at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences.

The end product was an informative and gamified learning environment on the topics of "Human Body", "STIs" and "Contraception". Learners are guided through the respective topics in an appealing way by two avatars. Informative texts, flipcards and short videos are used to convey the sex education content in an age-appropriate and sometimes interactive way. At the end of each chapter there is an interactive quiz to consolidate the content in a fun way.

The resulting course programme can be accessed at any time according to individual needs. The learning paths are low-threshold and can be explored in a self-regulated way through individual modules. Course participation is uncomplicated and anonymous.

A more detailed description of the practical project from the Master's degree programme in E-Learning and Knowledge Management can be found in the overview of practical projects 2021/2022.
